Description

If you really want to understand the interlocutor it isn’t enough to listen to him. You have to move on next level of listening - on active listening. During active listening, we focus our attention on the interlocutor. We, as listeners, should get away from our own experiences, from giving advice and opinions about what we have heard, and instead we try to see the situation from the interlocutor's point of view and understand why it is important to him/her (and not how it affects us!). We should ask additional questions in order to obtain more information about him that would help us understand him better. For all of this, we have to pay much more attention during a conversation on our co-speaker and listen to him carefully. It is a powerful experience to be listened by someone who is trying to help you clarify your thoughts and make clear conclusions. On the other hand, it is also very important to relax and immerse yourself in the experience of active listening, because a conversation in which our co-speaker is listening to us attentively may offer some new insights into our own personalities and the things we are yet to deal with in our own lives.
